Empowering Ugandan women through climate conscious fashion

Empowering Ugandan Women
In Bigodi, Uganda, where 90% of rural women rely on farming for income, Seeds and Stories, a women-led social enterprise to empower Ugandan women, addresses the effects of climate change and unsustainable farming practices. Through circular fashion, it promotes gender equality, community development, and environmental regeneration.
Challenges

Women farmers in Bigodi face severe income insecurity, averaging only $1 per day. Lack of access to education and high illiteracy rates exacerbate these economic and social challenges, compounded by environmental degradation and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Solution

Seeds and Stories, founded by Kyla Egan and Margarida Vasconcelos, empowers local women by selling handmade, sustainable fashion products. These include accessories like hand-woven purses and banana fiber shoes, fostering economic independence and preserving traditional techniques.

Impact

The enterprise provides livelihood opportunities and free training programs, including permaculture training and literacy classes. By employing community members and expanding their skill sets, Seeds and Stories empowers women, with 19 staff members employed and over 50 trained in three years.

Expansion

Seeds and Stories has reached international markets through e-commerce platforms, creating sustainable markets for local craftsmanship. Its holistic approach not only promotes gender equality and community development but also contributes to environmental conservation in Kibale National Park.

Conclusion

Seeds and Stories exemplifies how sustainable fashion can transform the lives of Ugandan women farmers, addressing income insecurity, environmental concerns, and promoting community empowerment in Bigodi.
